Do the huts serve vegetarian and vegan meals?

Most accommodations offer vegetarian meal options, although vegan options may be more difficult to find in huts. However, we will let you know in advance if there are any vegan options available so that you can plan accordingly.

Which equipment do I need for a hiking tour in the Dolomites?

In addition to the essential items such as hiking shoes, a backpack, and sports clothes , there are several other important items you should pack for your hut-to-hut hiking tour. Check out our comprehensive list of recommended equipment .

While we do not require you to have insurance before booking, we strongly recommend that you do. Look into joining the Italian Alpine Club , which might provide coverage in the event of any unexpected incidents during your hike.

Are the huts comfortable accommodations?

Mountain huts may not be luxurious, but they are cozy and comfortable, offering warm beds, delicious meals, and toilets. You can choose between private rooms and dormitories, but it is important to book in advance if you want to avoid sharing a room with other people. Keep in mind that huts are popular and can fill up quickly, so it is best to plan ahead to secure your preferred accommodation. You can read all about the comfort of rifugios here .

Is it appropriate for kids?

As long as children are physically prepared for long hiking days and are sure-footed, they should not have any problems participating in the tour. We recommend that children be at least eight years old to ensure their safety and enjoyment of the experience.

Can I shorten some of the stages?

None of the stages offer any shortcuts if you want to get to the end of your hike. If you get too tired , you can conclude your hike sooner at one of the road-equipped mountain passes or head for the nearest town.

How to get to the Dolomites?

There are several ways to get to the Dolomites. If you are flying to Europe, you can then combine your flight with a bus, train, or car ride. You can read more about it on our subpage .

Your adventure on the Alta Via 2 begins with a hike to St. Andrea, where you have the option to take the cable car up to Valcroce. The alternative route is a steep but well-maintained path that offers stunning views of the Dolomites and the rich flora and fauna of the Puez-Odle Nature Park. The journey leads you to the first stop on the Alta Via 2, the Rifugio Plose, perched 2447 meters above Bressanone.

From Rifugio Plose, your journey on the Alta Via 2 continues with a descent to the Rodella Pass. As you continue, you’ll reach the base of Sass de Putia, the most challenging part of this stage. The Forcella della Pùtia rises ahead like an immense gateway into the enchanted kingdom of the Dolomites. To reach the Forcella, you’ll face a 500-meter climb. The path starts gently but soon turns into steep switchbacks. Once at the Forcella della Pùtia, a flat, panoramic path leads you to the Poma Pass, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of Rifugio Genova, nestled at 2297 meters. A final 30-minute walk brings you to the refuge.

From Rifugio Genova, your hike begins with a scenic stretch heading east before turning south along the eastern side of Bronsoi. This path leads you to the Fùrcia de Medalges. Continuing along the ridge, you’ll ascend to Fùrcia dla Róa, a saddle at 2617 meters dividing the Odle and Puez groups. The trail then descends into a debris basin before climbing again to Fórces de Siëles. From here, it turns northeast, becoming narrow with metal ropes for assistance. After a brief flat section, it descends eastward through the grassy plains of Munt de Pùez, eventually leading you to Rifugio Puez at 2475 meters.

Today you’ll follow the trail southeast across the vast plateau. Beyond Forcella de Ciampëi, you'll strike southwest towards Passo Gardena. You’ll pass the picturesque Lech de Crespëina and ascend steeply to Forcella de Crespëina. After a descent and another climb through loose rock, you’ll arrive at Forcella Cir. The trail gently undulates through boulders and pastures to Passo Gardena. There, you’ll take the trail toward Rifugio Pisciadù. The path climbs through a narrow, rocky valley and up a debris-filled slope, with sections equipped with fixed ropes. After a short descent, you’ll reach the Rifugio Pisciadù at 2585 meters.

The day starts with a hike along the lake's eastern shore. Above Val de Tita are two options: an easier path or a more challenging route with fixed ropes. The trail continues on gravel and occasional snow patches to the Altipiano del Sella, crossing the plateau before descending to Forcella d'Antersass. The hike then heads towards the summit of Antersass before descending to Rifugio Boè. You can summit Piz Boè, Sella's highest summit, before continuing to Passo Pordòi. From there, the path winds along the Vièl dal Pan with views of the Marmolada, eventually reaching Lake Fedaia.

A long day is ahead. The first stage of the hike leads along a paved road down to Malga Ciapella. A bus operates between Passo Fedaia and Malga Ciapella to shorten the distance. Malga Ciapella serves as the gateway to Marmolada’s second-highest peak, Punta Rocca. The trail becomes quieter after Malga Ciapella while climbing to Forcella Rossa, beginning through conifer forests and ascending across high alpine pastures. The final stage of the day descends from Forcella Rossa to Passo San Pellegrino, passing through beautiful alpine meadows.

Today's hike begins with a climb southeast through grassy terrain, reaching the High Gypsies' pastures at around 2300 meters. The trail offers stunning views of Civetta, Pelmo, Tofàne, and the Pale di San Martino. Descending from the saddle, the path leads to Forcella Pradazzo, Pradazzo Hut, and Vallès Pass. From here, the trail ascends to Veneggia Pass and continues along a ridge and grassy slopes, passing Veneggiotta Pass and Fochet del Focobon. The final section is steep, with fixed ropes assisting the ascent to Passo Arduni. A short walk soon brings you to Rifugio Volpi al Mulaz at 2571 meters.

The day begins with a short ascent along a steep scree slope to the Mulaz Pass, then follows the trail to Forcella Margherita. You'll continue southward, reaching the highest point of the route at Passo delle Faràngole at 2932 meters. After crossing the pass, a steep descent leads toward Col de la Burèla. The trail then follows the western side of Val delle Comelle, descending through steep meadows with the aid of steel cables. The trail begins by descending into the wide Val di Roda. The path leads to Col delle Fede, where you’ll take the junction with a trail equipped with ladders and ropes, guiding you up to the saddle of Passo di Ball. From there, the trail descends into Val Pradidali, reaching Rifugio Pradidali. The hike continues northeast, with a challenging ascent aided by fixed ropes, usually requiring via ferrata equipment. The trail climbs over rocky slopes to Passo delle Lede, followed by a steep descent into Valon delle Lede. At the bottom of Canali Valley, a series of switchbacks leads to Rifugio Treviso.

You'll begin by heading south through a scenic, sparse forest. The trail soon continues with a series of switchbacks in a wide gully. The ascent gradually takes you up to Forcella d'Oltro, the highest point of the day at nearly 2100 meters. Here, you'll descend steeply before continuing southwestward across a mix of grassy and rocky terrain. After maintaining elevation for about an hour, the path begins a more significant descent, re-entering the tree line. It eventually leads to Passo Cereda and the nearby Rifugio Cereda at 1361 meters.

The trail begins by heading east along the road to the village of Padreterno, where a small road branches off south. From here, the path ascends southeast, passing through a gorge and climbing steadily to Comedón Pass, marking your entry into the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park. After descending to Piano della Regina, the trail climbs again to the Feltre Bivouac Walter Bodo. Continuing on the narrow path, the route winds under the walls of Sass de Mura, crosses pastures, and finally reaches Pass de Mura. A short descent brings you to Rifugio Bruno Boz at 1718 meters.

The last day starts on a path leading to Passo Finestra and onward to Croce d'Aune. Along the way, the trail crosses the Piazza del Diavolo and passes through Busa di Pietena and Busa delle Meraveie before reaching Rifugio Dal Piaz, the final rifugio of the Alta Via 2. The last section of the hike includes a straightforward descent to Passo Croce d'Aune. This final stretch offers beautiful views of the Feltre Valley. Upon reaching Passo Croce d'Aune, you’ll catch a bus and end your day in the charming town of Feltre.

The Alta Via 2 is a demanding and exhilarating journey through the heart of the Dolomites for experienced hikers. This iconic long-distance route, known for its technical difficulty and breathtaking scenery, spans two weeks and covers a range of terrains, from high mountain passes to rocky ridges and via ferrata sections.

Unlike its counterpart, the Alta Via 1, this route is reserved for those well-versed in alpine hiking and have experience with via ferratas. The path leads you through some of the most striking mountain groups in the region, including the Sella, Marmolada, and Pale di San Martino ranges.

As you traverse the route, you'll encounter challenging ascents and descents that demand physical endurance and technical skill. The trail takes you across exposed ridges, narrow ledges, and steep climbs secured with fixed ropes, iron ladders, and rungs.

Some sections require the use of a via ferrata kit and helmet. Optional extensions and ascents offer even more opportunities to test your limits, with rewards that include panoramic views of the Dolomites' most iconic peaks.

Each day on the Alta Via 2 brings a new challenge and a new perspective, whether you're crossing the high plateaus of the Sella massif, skirting the base of the Marmolada glacier, or navigating the rocky spires of the Pale di San Martino.

The route is punctuated by stays in traditional mountain refuges, where you'll find respite after long days on the trail.

We handle all logistics, from booking accommodations to providing detailed maps and GPS navigation. However, we strongly advise against booking a self-guided tour unless you are experienced with via ferratas and technical alpine terrain. For most hikers, we suggest a guided tour with expert mountain guides.

Bressanone/Brixen

Bressanone sits where the Isarco and Rienza valleys converge, making it ideal for accessing Val di Funes and the Puez–Odle region. The walkable old town and nearby train station streamline movement across the northern Dolomites. A historic bishopric for nearly a millennium, Brixen preserves a strong architectural identity around its cathedral square. Its central position supports flexible routing across multiple valleys without long detours.

Puez–Odle Natural Park

This protected area lies between Val Gardena and Val di Funes, defined by the sharp Odle peaks and the open Puez plateau that forms a natural high corridor. Traditional Ladin paths once linked the surrounding valleys through these meadows and saddles. Today, the area’s mix of narrow passes and broad uplands marks the first major landscape shift on Alta Via 2. Its elevated terrain often experiences fast weather changes that shape daily route decisions.

Marmolada Glacier

The Marmolada Glacier lies on the northern flank of the Dolomites’ highest peak at 3,343 meters, forming the region’s last significant glacier. Its upper basin and crevassed slopes sit below steep limestone ridges, offering clear contrasts between ice and rock. Viewpoints from Punta Rocca and the Fedaia area highlight the glacier’s scale and retreat patterns. The glacier was a strategic observation area during World War I, with remnants of ice-bound military positions still documented today.

Sella Mountain Group

The Sella Group forms a massive limestone plateau rising above 2,900 meters, bordered by deep valleys and the well-known passes of Sella, Gardena, Campolongo, and Pordoi. Sheer walls drop from the plateau into cirques and gullies, giving the group its characteristic block-like profile. Trails and high routes skirt ledges and terraces with uninterrupted panoramic views. The massif’s geology reflects ancient coral-reef formations that shaped much of the central Dolomites.

Altopiano delle Pale

The Pale di San Martino plateau rises above 2,500 meters, presenting a vast, lunar-like expanse of pale dolomite carved by wind and glacial processes. Its flat, exposed surface contrasts sharply with the vertical towers on its edges, offering long-range views across the central Dolomites. Access routes from San Martino di Castrozza climb quickly into this high-altitude environment. Early cartographers and explorers described the plateau as one of the most unusual alpine landscapes in the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hiking in the Alps is typically possible from mid-June to late September, depending on the snow conditions at high elevations. Many hiking routes cross mountain passes that are located above 2000 meters, so it is important to check the current conditions if you plan to visit in early summer.

Keep in mind that the huts along these routes close for the season outside of this time frame, so it is not possible to plan multi-day tours outside of these months.

We have rated our tours on a difficulty scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most challenging. The difficulty level of a tour indicates how fit you need to be and how much hiking is required. All of our Alta Via 1 tours are suitable for people who are regularly active and can hike for about six to eight hours per day.

In addition to the physical demands of the hike, there is also a technical difficulty level to consider. This refers to the skill level required to navigate the path. A level 1 trail is smooth and wide, like a gravel road, while a level 5 trail is uneven and exposed, requiring the use of your hands for balance. Essentially, the higher the technical difficulty level, the more surefooted and skilled in scrambling you need to be.

We recommend booking your tour as soon as possible to secure a spot, as accommodations along the trail tend to fill up quickly. This will help you ensure that you have a place to stay during your trip.

In the event of an injury, it is best to call local emergency services. While you may be in a remote area and unable to continue without further exacerbating your injury, it is important to remember that you will be hiking along popular trails and will not be completely stranded.

However, if you are feeling too tired to continue hiking, you can choose to reroute towards the nearest town along the trail and find public transportation there. Although Alta Via 1 does not pass directly through any large towns, it does pass close to some of them.

Most of the huts along our hut-to-hut hikes are equipped with showers, but their availability may depend on recent rainfall. Keep in mind that mountain huts are not luxurious hotels, so don't expect the same level of amenities. However, they do offer a comfortable and convenient place to rest after a day of hiking.

No. The huts provide blankets and pillows for comfort, but it is a good idea to bring your own sleeping liner to reduce the need for the huts to wash their bed linens every day. If you don’t, you might need to buy one on the spot.

Cell phone reception in the mountains can be unreliable. You may be able to get a signal if you can see a town or if you are near a mountain hut. Even if you cannot get a signal inside the hut, you may be able to get one by stepping outside. Wi-fi is not widely available in the mountains, and is only offered at select lodges.

If you dress appropriately, you can typically complete most stages of the hike even in light rain. However, if a storm is forecasted, it is important to not hike and to wait until the storm passes, even if that means spending an additional day at the hut. This is for your own safety.

We had an incredible experience booking our Dolomites hiking adventure through Hut-To-Hut Hiking Dolomites (one of the many companies operated through World Discovery). Traveling all the way from Hawai‘i, we were initially a bit hesitant about booking with a company based in Slovenia, but everything was flawless. Even factoring in the 12 hour time difference between Hawai'i and Europe, their communication was fast and professional. The planning materials were thorough and incredibly helpful including detailed daily hiking routes, suggested scenic stops and snack breaks at rifugios along the way, an app with offline downloadable maps customized to our routes, and clear hiking and safety guides. Every rifugio they booked for us was fantastic: clean, welcoming, well-located, and full of charm. They booked us at a 5-star hotel for the last night and the spa treatments were heavenly after days of hiking. The post-hike airport transportation was seamless, and we were especially grateful to have their help booking so close to peak summer season. There’s no way we could have secured such great rifugios on our own, each one they chose was a highlight. We felt fully supported throughout the trip, even though it was self-guided. They provide a 24/7 Whatsapp number which was nice to have in case of emergencies. We highly recommend Hut-To-Hut Hiking Dolomites for anyone looking to hike the Dolomites without the stress of figuring out all the logistics yourself. Would book with them again in a heartbeat.

Well organized trip. The travel agents were extremely communicative, provided great service, and made adjustments as needed. The GPS app provided was another highlight. It worked exceptionally well made the trek much easier. The itinerary was thorough and included lots of extra details about the region as well as scaling options. The only drawbacks were that the company is based in Slovenia (doesn't seem to have a presence in South Tyrol), and the cost, which was higher than similar treks from competitors.
